My Perennial Garden = Complete

Well, earlier this week, I pointed out that I was not sharpening the saw. At all! I stayed up past midnight (or 2 am or 3 am) more than a few times this week while trying to keep up with assignments coming in and trying to update Phoenix and StudentVUE so students knew where they were. I mentioned in Morning Meeting this morning that I needed to do a better job sharpening my saw, so today, I did!

Last weekend, it was sunny and warm, and I needed bird seed and glue from Home Depot. Apparently, everyone else needed something from Home Depot, too. The line was crazy long to get in, so I figured I could come back later. Today was drizzling and a work day, so after my third Meet meeting, I needed to take a break, so I went to get my bird seed and glue. I also figured I'd pick out my last few perennials to attract birds and butterflies, as well as pick up a second bird feeder. (I'll write another post about ALL of the birds we've seen this week soon.)

Since it had rained earlier and was still overcast, I figured damp clay soil was easier to dig in than hard, dry ground, so I got started. I said it shouldn't take long. Ha! I was wrong!! I planted the two blueberry bushes first, easy-peasy.  Then I tried digging in the front corner of my garden. I was NOT expecting the rock. It wasn't just a rock. Our ground is FULL of rocks. This was ENORMOUS! I spent well over an hour battling this mini-boulder that did not want to let go of the hole it was in. However, after pulling out the 6-pound railroad pick and Ellie holding the shovel so it wouldn't fall back in the hole, we were victorious!

Planting the last 3 plants was much less dramatic, and if I hadn't encountered the ROCK, the whole task would have been done in about an hour. Instead, it was a two-and-a-half endeavor. At least I got my steps and exercise in. I'm sure I won't be able to move tomorrow after this whole-body shovel workout! I may not be able to get off the couch or lift my arms tomorrow!

However, I am proud of my little garden. I've been wanting to do this for a while now, so I am happy I've made progress on this goal. I hope it grows and thrives and brings lots of wildlife to my yard. Next, I need to figure out with what to replace my disintegrating wooden rails. Have any ideas? Maybe I'll find enough rocks to make a small wall! I'll share pictures as it grows!
