Whatcha Bakin'?

It is not the healthiest habit, but I suppose I could have picked unhealthier habits. I love baking, though not necessarily cooking. Cooking a meal is satisfying, but baking is exciting to me! I think I enjoy the science of it, figuring out how different ingredients go together to work. To balance out my desire for baking, I've also set my personal goals for eating fruits and veggies daily as well as exercising. But back to baking.

My family always enjoys watching the Great British Baking Show. It has piqued my interest in ingredients, techniques, and recipes that I otherwise would not have heard of! Mr. Arnwine's Mom grew up in London, so I've experimented with recipes to help remind her of growing up in England. My favorite British recipes so far are Millionaire's Shortbread (homemade caramel and shortbread covered in crisp, dark chocolate) and Mary Berry's less-icing Bakewell Tart. Yum!!

We also thoroughly enjoy watching Nailed It on Netflix. Some of those bakes are so disastrously hysterical that I've had tears of laughter running down my face watching these amateur bakers try insanely challenging designs. Jacques makes it look so easy, but these bakers? Oh man! From this show, I have not necessarily been inspired to bake anything, but it does remind me to take things less seriously!

Over the past week, we have been busy baking. I tried some buttery, Jewish jam-filled cookies called Hamantaschan (think tri-corner hats filled with jam). I also made more banana bread, (again - I know!), but added cocoa powder to make it chocolate banana bread. That was a hit! We also baked corn bread, then tried a new recipe for a pear-cranberry crumble pie. That was also pretty amazing! We also made a half-batch of a recipe I was given for the "Original Girl Scout Cookies" from 1922. With only 4 of us in the house, we do NOT need PILES of cookies, so I asked my daughters to help me cut the recipe in half. They're pretty good at it!

Finally, the last crazy thing we baked as a surprise for Addie is a bunny cake. We prefer chocolate cake, so I found a recipe for homemade chocolate cake. I also wanted to try a new recipe for icing, so I found one of those online as well. After the cakes baked, we cut them and frosted them to look like a giant bunny head, complete with ears and bow-tie. Apparently, a bunny cake is pretty popular around Easter time, because Mrs. Cumberledge's Mom baked HER family a bunny cake, too! In our house, we will be eating this thing for DAYS! (Seriously too much cake for 4 people!) My next recipe is a Turkish cookie recipe from my neighbor, with shortbread, chocolate, and a toasted almond. Maybe we'll try it next weekend, after we run out of cookies and cake!

So do you enjoy baking? How about cooking? Do you get to help in the kitchen, or are you able to make things by yourself? What are some of your favorite recipes? Have any that you can share? Obviously, I am always looking for new ideas!
We have some strange cookie cutters!
